Two shirtless mixed martial artists exchange punches in a cage; fighter with red gloves lands a blow on a bleeding opponent with blue gloves nearby.

Justin Gaethje delivered the performance of a lifetime on Sunday night, upsetting previously undefeated Ilia Topuria to capture the undisputed lightweight title in the UFC Freedom 250 main event.

Heading into the fight, few gave Gaethje much of a chance. Topuria entered the bout as a heavy favorite and carried a perfect professional record, but the veteran refused to let his championship dream slip away.

Gaethje started aggressively, using his jab and uppercuts to disrupt Topuria’s rhythm. The champion responded with heavy right hands and combinations that repeatedly found their target. By the end of the opening round, both fighters had already absorbed significant damage.

Topuria took control in the second round. He targeted Gaethje’s body with brutal precision and eventually dropped him with a series of liver shots. The Spaniard quickly advanced to dominant positions on the ground and threatened with submissions, but Gaethje survived the onslaught and made it back to his corner.

As the third round began, Topuria appeared to slow down while Gaethje found a second wind. The American landed a thunderous right hand that sent the champion crashing to the canvas. Although Topuria recovered, he never looked quite the same afterward.

Gaethje continued to pile on the pressure in the fourth round, landing clean uppercuts, powerful combinations, and heavy body shots. Topuria showed tremendous heart and even managed a brief takedown, but the damage continued to mount.

Two mixed martial artists exchange punches and clinch inside a cage during a bout, sweat and blood visible on their bodies.

A devastating knee to the body near the end of the round appeared to be the final blow.

After returning to his corner bloodied and exhausted, Topuria’s team elected not to send him back out for the fifth round, handing him the first loss of his professional career and crowning Gaethje as the undisputed UFC lightweight champion.

Gaethje later admitted he entered the fight fully aware of the challenge ahead and even prepared himself mentally for defeat.

“I told myself I was going to lose,” Gaethje said. “I told myself I was going to get embarrassed so I could go to my most primal place and dig deep.”

“That guy had me in trouble. He had me rocked. He hurt my chin. He smoked my liver. But I stayed in it.”

“I’m from America. Two hundred and fifty years ago, we were way bigger than 6-to-1 underdogs, and look at us thriving now,” Gaethje said after the fight. “I know that was absolutely legendary because I can’t even believe it.”

“My durability, my tenacity, and my heart carried me through those first two rounds. Nobody can outwork me in round three, and especially not in championship rounds four and five.”

“I owed him that body shot because he hurt my liver so bad. Hard work, baby. I am made for these moments. This sport was made for me. I’ve shown you why. I’m the most consistent, most exciting guy that’s ever been in this cage.”

The result immediately becomes one of the biggest upsets in UFC history, making Justin Gaethje vs Ilia Topuria one of the most memorable lightweight title fights the promotion has ever seen.

For Gaethje, the victory finally delivers the one achievement that had eluded him throughout his legendary career, undisputed UFC gold.

“I promised my mom I wouldn’t make a decision tonight,” Gaethje said when asked about retirement.
As for Topuria, he leaves Washington humbled but far from finished.
