Isah had just lost his father and was always in trouble and getting beat up by bigger kids. Hoping to defend himself, he decided to learn Taekwondo and was lucky enough to find a coach willing to be a mentor and father figure.
The Nigerian-born fighter gained entry into the Cadet team in the Nigerian Tae Kwon Do Federation at the age of 14. He later graduated to the senior team, where he competed at the Commonwealth Games in Edinburg, Scotland, and won a gold medal.
