Smiling man with a beard in a dark brown jacket is being interviewed at a UFC event, with UFC and Paramount+ logos in the backdrop.

Youssef Zalal has spoken out after suffering a setback in the main event of UFC Vegas 116.

Zalal shared the Octagon with former UFC bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling on Saturday night inside the Apex, but Sterling’s grappling proved to be the difference. After five rounds, Sterling secured a unanimous decision win and moved closer to a potential featherweight title shot.

For Youssef Zalal, the defeat ended an impressive eight-fight winning streak. Still, the Moroccan contender remained positive after the biggest fight of his career.

“Alhamdulillah!! Thank you guys for all the support. I’ll be back. Keep smiling,” Zalal wrote on Instagram.

Despite the loss, Youssef Zalal showed maturity and composure, making it clear he plans to bounce back stronger.

Sterling also responded to the post and praised his opponent for pushing him throughout the contest.

“Always love my brotha! You pushed me to new limits and I hope I pushed you too! Wallahi you will be champion one day!”

That message says a lot about how highly Sterling views Youssef Zalal’s future.

Shirtless UFC fighter with red gloves celebrates victory with arms raised inside the cage, a referee stands nearby, and teammates cheer in the background.

At just 29 years old, Youssef Zalal still has time on his side. Before facing Sterling, he had not lost a professional MMA fight since June 2021, when he dropped a split decision to Sean Woodson. Since then, he rebuilt his momentum and forced his way into the featherweight rankings conversation.

A win over Sterling would have launched Zalal directly into title discussions. Instead, he now faces a different challenge: regrouping and proving he belongs among the division’s elite.

Even in defeat, Youssef Zalal showed he belongs on the big stage. If he learns from this experience and keeps improving, his road back to contention may not take long.
