Umar Nurmagomedov has spoken out following the first knockout defeat of his professional MMA career after a shocking loss to Song Yadong in the UFC Shanghai main event.
The highly regarded bantamweight contender entered the fight looking to solidify his place near the top of the division, but Song Yadong had other plans. After weathering Nurmagomedov’s early grappling success, the Chinese star turned the tide and delivered one of the biggest knockouts of 2026.
The defeat marked just the second loss of Nurmagomedov’s career and the first time he had ever been stopped inside the cage.

During the commotion, Usman briefly collided with Yadong as the Chinese fighter celebrated his victory.
The incident quickly generated speculation online, with some fans claiming Usman attempted to strike Yadong during the encounter.

Usman later addressed the controversy on social media, dismissing accusations that he intended to attack Yadong.
“People are making such a huge tragedy out of this; they should just calm down,” Usman wrote.”There are things far worse. You don’t have to think for long, just look at what is happening in the world.”
The reigning PFL lightweight champion also directly addressed claims that he tried to throw an elbow during the incident.
“And regarding the claims that I supposedly wanted to hit his opponent, if I had wanted to, I would have hit him.”
Usman made it clear that his only concern was his brother’s health after witnessing the brutal knockout.
“You angry, petty, and jealous people. Your problem is that you have never had, and never will have, an understanding of family love.”
“If you don’t know what a brother means to his brother, then I’m not the one you should feel sorry for. You should feel sorry for yourselves.”
Umar Nurmagomedov Provides Update
Fortunately, Umar Nurmagomedov recovered after the frightening finish and later reassured fans that he was doing well.
While the loss was undoubtedly a setback, the 29-year-old remains one of the most talented fighters in the bantamweight division and is expected to remain a major player in future title discussions.
For Song Yadong, the victory could not have come at a better time. After stopping one of the division’s most highly touted contenders, he has renewed his calls for a championship opportunity and believes he has done enough to earn a shot at UFC gold.
