Ilia Topuria has finally broken his silence following his devastating defeat to Justin Gaethje at UFC Freedom 250, opening up about the loss in an emotional message directed at his son, Hugo.
The former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion shared a video on September 4, marking his first major social media post since the aftermath of his first professional defeat. Topuria reflected on his defeat with a short video essay framed as a message to his son, Hugo. Rather than focusing on excuses or revenge, Topuria used the message to reflect on what the painful experience taught him about failure, character and resilience.
Topuria entered UFC Freedom 250 undefeated and defending his lightweight title against Gaethje. The Spaniard had built a 17-0 professional record and established himself as one of the UFC’s biggest stars before running into a relentless performance from the former interim champion. Gaethje battered Topuria through four rounds, with Topuria’s corner ultimately stopping the fight before the fifth round. The defeat cost Topuria his lightweight championship and ended his perfect professional record. Topuria had previously released a brief statement immediately after the fight congratulating Gaethje and promising that their story was not over. But his latest video offers a much deeper reflection on what the defeat meant to him personally.

“Hugo, I’ve been thinking about you these past two days,” Topuria said. “About what you felt when you saw me go down. I know it hurt you, and as your dad, I would’ve done anything to spare you from that moment. But I’m also glad we went through it together. Because that day made both of us stronger.
“I want you to always remember one thing, you won’t always win in life, and that’s OK, because losing isn’t what matters. What matters is how you lose, who you choose to be when everything goes dark. When you have to choose between staying on the ground or getting back up. I think God wanted me to go through that moment to teach me something no victory ever could. Character doesn’t show up when everything’s going your way. It shows up when life throws its hardest day at you, and you know what I found? After going through that hell, I’m stronger than I was before, because a champion isn’t someone who never falls. It’s someone who always finds a reason to get back up.”
Topuria also delivered a broader message about dealing with failure, explaining that losing is not what defines a person. Instead, he said what matters is how someone responds when everything goes wrong. “That’s all I want for you,” Topuria said in his message to Hugo. “Not that you always win, but that you’re never afraid to lose. That no defeat ever gets to tell you who you are. Only you get to decide that, and no matter what happens, always remember this: Character is the one victory no one can ever take away from you.”

For now, Topuria’s immediate focus appears to be recovery rather than rushing back into the Octagon. The defeat was particularly damaging physically, with reports indicating that he suffered fractures around his orbital bones. His return date has not been established, although a comeback in 2027 has been suggested following his medical recovery.
Meanwhile, Gaethje has moved on as the undisputed UFC lightweight champion and is already looking toward his first title defense. A rematch with Topuria remains a possibility down the line, but it is not currently confirmed. For Topuria, however, the latest message suggests the defeat has become about more than losing a championship but now part of his comeback story and if his words are anything to go by, “El Matador” believes the next version of himself could be even more dangerous.
