Charles Oliveira submits Mateusz Gamrot with rear-naked choke in round two. Charles Oliveira put on a vintage performance in front of his home crowd, submitting Mateusz Gamrot with a rear-naked choke in Round 2 of the UFC Rio main event.

Charles “Do Bronx” Oliveira returns to the Octagon on October 11, 2025, at the Farmasi Arena in Rio de Janeiro, taking on Mateusz Gamrot as his opponent. Originally, Oliveira was slated to face Rafael Fiziev, but Fiziev pulled out due to injury and Gamrot stepped in on short notice.

Charles Oliveira last fought at UFC 317 on June 28, 2025, where he suffered a devastating first-round knockout loss to Ilia Topuria, losing the lightweight crown . That defeat came after a hard-fought unanimous decision win over Michael Chandler at UFC 309 in November 2024, proving that “Do Bronx” still possesses the heart and finishing instincts that once made him one of the most feared fighters in the sport. Earlier in April 2024, Oliveira dropped a razor-close split decision to Arman Tsarukyan at UFC 300.

Across the cage was Mateusz Gamrot, a relentless grappler known for his pace and wrestling. He entered the bout riding momentum after securing a unanimous decision win over Ludovit Klein on May 31, 2025. That victory helped Gamrot rebound from a narrow split-decision loss to Dan Hooker at UFC 305 in August 2024. Before that, he showcased his grappling dominance with back-to-back wins over Rafael dos Anjos and Rafael Fiziev. the latter ending via TKO in September 2023 when Fiziev suffered a leg injury.

The fighters hugged even before instruction was given. Right after the instructions they both touched gloves before getting into action. Oliveira landed a sharp three-punch combination, but Gamrot quickly shot in and secured an easy takedown. Oliveira tried to set up a guillotine, but Gamrot slipped his head out right away. Oliveira then trapped an arm and kept tightening the hold, making things dangerous for a moment, but Gamrot stayed calm and escaped.

Oliveira went back to attacking the arm, looking for another attempt, then used it to sweep and take Gamrot’s back. The former champ kept trying to improve his position and briefly complained to Goddard, possibly about a glove grab. Moments later, Oliveira spun smoothly to the back again, locked in both hooks, and started hunting for a rear-naked choke. Gamrot stood up, but Oliveira held on with a tight body triangle that pulled Gamrot back to the mat. In the final 45 seconds, Oliveira completely controlled the action as the crowd chanted and sang his name, while he finished the round in a dominant position.

At the start of Round 2, Oliveira again spoke to referee Marc Goddard about possible glove grabs, and the action resumed. Gamrot landed a partially blocked right hand, then threw another looping shot that Oliveira easily read. Gamrot followed with a jab-jab-right combo, but Oliveira answered back with a sharp counter that caught his attention. Another slick counter-combination from Oliveira forced Gamrot to backpedal, though Gamrot managed to land a right hand of his own.

Oliveira cracked him again, showing complete confidence and zero respect for Gamrot’s power. He ripped a hard body shot that echoed through the arena, ignoring Gamrot’s return punches. Moments later, Oliveira shot in, scored a clean takedown, and instantly took Gamrot’s back. With both hooks in, he locked up a tight rear-naked choke and within seconds, Gamrot tapped out, the end came at 2:48 in the second round. Charles Oliveira made it look effortless, then leaped into the crowd to celebrate an incredible performance in front of his home fans.

“I’m trying to hold back the tears right now,” Oliveira said after welcoming his family into the octagon with him. “This is all for you guys. This is not about money, fame, status or anything. Screw it, this is Brazil!.” “Hey Hunter [Campbell],” Oliveira shouted to the UFC chief business officer sitting cageside. “Charles Oliveira and Max Holloway, ‘BMF’ let’s make that happen.”
