Two UFC fighters exchange punches in the cage, one getting cut on his face as blood drips from his nose.

Alexander Volkanovski reminded the featherweight division why he remains one of the most dangerous champions in the sport, stopping previously undefeated Movsar Evloev with a barrage of punches in the second round of their UFC 333 main event. The UFC brings championship stakes and high-level MMA action to Abu Dhabi last weekend as UFC 333 taok over Etihad Arena on Yas Island on Saturday, October 24, 2026.

Two title fights headline the card, with Alexander Volkanovski defending his featherweight championship against undefeated contender Movsar Evloev before Petr Yan and Merab Dvalishvili settle their rivalry in a bantamweight title trilogy.

Volkanovski enters the defence with renewed momentum after winning back-to-back unanimous decisions against Diego Lopes. Their first meeting at UFC 314 in April 2025 sees the Australian reclaim the featherweight championship, while their rematch at UFC 325 in January 2026 ends with Volkanovski retaining the belt.

The champion’s recent form provides a strong response to the difficult period that precedes those victories. Volkanovski suffers consecutive knockout defeats against Islam Makhachev at UFC 294 and Ilia Topuria at UFC 298, with the latter costing him the featherweight title.

Evloev arrives in Abu Dhabi with a perfect 20-0 professional record and an impressive run of victories over ranked featherweights. His most recent outing against Lerone Murphy at UFC Fight Night 270 in March 2026 ends in a majority decision victory after five competitive rounds. Before that, Evloev earns decisions over Aljamain Sterling and Arnold Allen, further establishing himself among the division’s leading contenders.

Volkanovski opens the contest with inside leg kicks before working behind his jab, looking to establish his striking range against the southpaw challenger.
Evloev responds by driving forward for a takedown, briefly putting the champion’s defensive skills to the test. Volkanovski, however, gets back to his feet almost immediately, denying Evloev the opportunity to settle into top position.

Evloev continues to pursue his wrestling, attempting to bring Volkanovski to the canvas again but Volkanovski remains difficult to hold down, countering the attempts and returning to his striking. Volkanovski maintains forward pressure and continues landing punches, while Evloev works to close the distance and interrupt the champion’s rhythm.

Evloev begins the second round more successfully with his wrestling, securing a body lock and dragging Volkanovski to the canvas.
But Volkanovski quickly reverse the position and ends up on top, landing ground-and-pound before Evloev manages to work his way back to his feet.
Back in striking range, Volkanovski connects with a well-timed overhand right that appears to wobble the Evloev.

The exchange shifts the momentum toward the champion, who begins to find more opportunities to land clean punches.
Volkanovski follows with a sharp combination that forces Evloev to turn away from the incoming shots. Evloev was visibly hurt, and a cut opens on his head as the champion continues to press forward.

Two MMA fighters clash inside the cage; one man standing over the other delivering punches as the grounded opponent defends with his arms raised. A referee watches from the left.

The decisive moment comes when Volkanovski land a powerful left hand that sends Evloev down. Sensing the opportunity to finish, Volkanovski follows him to the canvas and unleashes a barrage of unanswered ground strikes.
Evloev covers up under the sustained attack, leaving the referee to step in and stop the contest at 4:54 of Round 2.

“He’s a great figher,” Volkanovski said after his latest title defefnse. “He was undefeated for a reason but I just said I’m the right guy for that job. I knew the ref would have to stop it when he covered up like that.
“I’m choosing to do this. I said if I didn’t take too much damage, we probably keep going so maybe we keep going. I feel the love and it’s paid off now. The love around the world is incredible.”

After tasting defeat for the first time, Evloev was understandably upset but he paid homage to Volkanovski on a job well done. “It was a terrible fight,” Evloev said. “He’s a good one. Older, stronger, better, he’s truly a legend. I’m grateful for this opportunity to be here. Alex, great champion, I’m happy to be here to share the cage with him.”

Volkanovski had turned an early wrestling exchange into a dominant finishing sequence, defending his title and handing Evloev the first defeat of his professional career. The victory strengthened Volkanovski’s position among the greatest featherweights in UFC history. His performance showed that he could defend against a persistent wrestler while remaining dangerous enough on the feet to end a championship fight in an instant.

For Evloev, the defeat was a painful first setback after building an undefeated professional record. He had moments of success with his wrestling, particularly at the start of the second round, but could not maintain control or withstand Volkanovski’s striking once the fight returned to the feet. Rather than allowing the challenger to dictate the pace, Volkanovski capitalised on the openings and closed the show with authority.
