Topuria

UFC lightweight champion Ilia Topuria has explained the personal circumstances behind his decision to step away from competition for at least the first half of 2026, addressing a serious legal matter that he says left him with no choice but to pause his career.

Topuria last fought in June, when he stopped Charles Oliveira to capture the UFC lightweight title and extend his perfect record to 17-0. Despite his absence, UFC CEO Dana White has confirmed that Topuria will remain champion while he deals with the situation.

In a detailed statement released on Monday, Topuria revealed that he has been facing what he describes as extortion attempts involving fabricated domestic violence allegations.

“In recent months, I have been subjected to severe and unacceptable pressure, including threats to disseminate false allegations of domestic abuse unless financial demands were met,” Topuria said. “These allegations are entirely unfounded. The truth is not a matter of opinion — it is a matter of evidence.”

Topuria stressed that he has taken immediate legal steps to protect himself and his family, noting that substantial documentation has already been submitted to the authorities.

“All relevant evidence has been carefully preserved and documented, including audio recordings, written communications, witness statements, and video material,” he added. “This evidence has been submitted to the appropriate judicial authorities in order to pursue legal action for attempted extortion, falsification of evidence, misappropriation of funds and personal property, and multiple threats.”

The undefeated champion explained that his initial silence was intentional, as he tried to shield his children from public scrutiny. However, he said remaining quiet began to allow damaging narratives to spread unchecked.

“My initial decision to remain silent was made solely to protect my children, who are the most important part of my life,” Topuria said. “However, I have come to understand that silence, under these circumstances, does not protect the truth, it allows false narratives to take hold.”

Topuria made it clear that stepping forward was not only about clearing his name, but also about setting an example.

“Today, I am stepping forward not only for my family and myself, but also to demonstrate that no one should be forced to yield to intimidation, manipulation, or fear,” he said. “Those who know me can attest that I have never engaged in violence of any kind, and that my life and career have always been guided by discipline, respect, and integrity.”

The Georgian-Spanish star added that he has complete faith in the judicial process and plans to let the courts handle the matter.

“I have full confidence in the judicial process and will allow the legal system to determine the facts based on evidence,” Topuria said. “Out of respect for my children and the ongoing legal proceedings, I will not be making any further public statements.”

Topuria’s decision to step away prompted the UFC to introduce an interim lightweight title, with Justin Gaethje and Paddy Pimblett scheduled to fight for it in January. Still, the champion remains firm that his focus is exactly where it needs to be for now.

For Ilia Topuria, protecting his family and his integrity outweighs any title defense and he’s confident the truth will speak for itself.
