In the UFC what makes a legend isn’t just their knockouts, their submissions, their trash talk or persona, It is the ability to rise up to the occasion, to live up to them moment to stand in the center of the ring and deliver to their fans a performance that lives up to the hype. And on the 9th of May 2026 Sean Strickland became a legend for a second in his UFC career as the first man to defeat Khamzat Chimaev and become the new UFC middleweight champion.

Going into the fight no one expected Strickland to put up much resistance in the face of Chimaev’s overwhelming pressure offense and aggression. No one except Strickland and his team at Xtreme Couture where they were 100% prepared for everything that Chimaev was. After getting taken down and controlled in the first round, Strickland used his hands to post up and prevented Chimaev from getting full control while he was searching for the best positions to try and get a submission, but Strickland was prepared for his wrestling and stayed safe enough to avoid any real danger from submission threat as well as fighting the hands and reducing any significant strikes from Chimaev. Something interesting happened after the bell, Eric Nicksick told Strickland “We have seen the best he can do” That might have as well been prophecy because no one alive could have foreseen what would happen next.

In the second round, Strickland’s jab came alive from long range to piece up Chimaev, the jabs were hurting Chimaev and leaving him gassed and frustrated which forced him to shoot two reckless takedowns, the second of which ended him on bottom pulling guard which shocked the entire MMA world because for 3 minutes Sean Strickland had Khamzat Chimaev pulling ground on bottom position and eating ground and pound. Strickland ended the round soundly in charge of the fight and even though Chimaev rallied some offense in round 4 and trying a takedown in the final round, it was more of the same to the final horn of round 5, Strickland resisting his offense and fighting back earning him a split decision victory
Sean taught the entire MMA world 2 lessons today. Never count him out of a fight and as long as any one has the courage to laced up a pair of gloves and step into the cage, they are capable of victory in a fight. And these lessons have cemented him not just as a champion before our very eyes but a legend in the hearts and minds of all of us as the man who always stood up and fought when it mattered, the man who never backed down because everyone said he wasn’t good enough or skilled enough to try, Sean Strickland is a living legend and our new UFC middleweight champion.
