UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture sustained significant injuries during an NHRA practice run in Kansas City. The 62-year-old MMA legend, known for pushing boundaries long after his fighting days, was airlifted to a burn center after his car crashed on the track. TMZ broke the news, confirming Couture suffered first- and second-degree burns, trauma-related injuries, and smoke inhalation.
Despite the severity of the accident, sources close to Couture told MMA Fighting that he’s expected to recover. Still, the incident temporarily halts his latest ambition, breaking into the world of professional drag racing.
Randy Couture had been preparing for his debut with the National Hot Rod Association through a Pro Mod program under Scag Racing. It marked another bold pivot in his storied career, and he wasn’t shy about the excitement it stirred in him.
“This is a new way to tickle that competitive spirit that I’ve had most of my life; a new place for me to get competitive and make a mark in racing,” Couture said.
“I’ll bring all the things I developed as a wrestler and martial artist into this realm and see what we can do. I have no idea how it’s going to go, but I’m excited about the opportunities.”
Couture had spent months preparing for his racing debut, putting in time behind the wheel and learning the ropes of the Pro Stock division. A few weeks ago, he described racing as something completely outside his comfort zone.

“I’ve been a fan of racing for 12, 13 years,” he said. “From up in the stands it looks really easy oh they just go fast … it’s so much more involved.”
Known for thriving in uncomfortable territory, Couture made a name for himself as one of the few two-division champions in UFC history. After retiring from fighting, he transitioned into coaching, acting, and commentary. He opened Xtreme Couture, one of Las Vegas’ top MMA gyms, and joined the PFL broadcast team while also building a solid film and TV career. In 2021, the PFL honored his legacy with a four-part documentary series, The Story of Randy Couture.
As of now, no details have been released about what caused the crash, but Couture has been through worse. The Army veteran and battle tested fighter has made a life out of defying odds, and If recovery goes as expected, Couture might still find himself back on track.
