PFL parts ways with Francis Ngannou, In a surprising development in the world of mixed martial arts, the Professional Fighters League (PFL) has officially released former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou. Ngannou signed with the PFL in May 2023 after leaving the UFC as one of the most feared heavyweights in the sport. His deal with the promotion was widely seen as groundbreaking, as it allowed him to compete in MMA while also pursuing opportunities in boxing. The agreement also made Ngannou the chairman and ambassador for PFL Africa.
Despite the excitement surrounding his signing, Ngannou competed only once under the PFL banner. In October 2024, he made his debut at PFL Super Fights: Battle of the Giants in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where he faced Brazilian heavyweight Renan Ferreira. Ngannou delivered a dominant performance, knocking Ferreira out in the first round to win the PFL Super Fights heavyweight title.
Outside of MMA, Ngannou also pursued major boxing bouts. He later faced Anthony Joshua in March 2024, where he suffered a knockout loss in their heavyweight boxing match. The PFL reportedly described the decision to release Ngannou as a mutual parting of ways, expressing respect for the fighter and appreciation for his contributions to the promotion. With the release, Ngannou becomes one of the most valuable free agents in combat sports.

“The Professional Fighters League has made the decision to part ways with Francis Ngannou. We have great respect for Francis as both an athlete and a person, and we wish him success in the next chapter of his combat sports career. The PFL remains focused on recruiting and signing the best athletes in the sport while continuing to deliver world-class competition for fans around the globe.”
Now 39 years old, Ngannou still holds a strong reputation as one of the hardest punchers in MMA history. His future remains uncertain, but possibilities include more boxing fights, a return to MMA under another promotion, or even a potential comeback to the UFC. Whatever his next move may be, Francis Ngannou’s name will continue to carry major weight in combat sports.
