Kayla Harrison has spoken publicly for the first time after being forced out of her highly anticipated UFC 324 title fight against Amanda Nunes.

Just over a week before the Jan. 24 event, the UFC bantamweight champion withdrew from the matchup due to a neck injury that required surgery. On Thursday, Kayla Harrison posted an emotional video on social media explaining her decision and apologizing to Nunes.

“This is a tough one,” Kayla Harrison said. “I had to have surgery on my neck yesterday here in New York City with the specialist, Dr. Kim. So, obviously, we’re going to have to reschedule the fight. And I just want to say I’m sorry. I’m sorry to Amanda. I was really looking forward to it.”

Harrison, who wore a neck brace during the video, took time to thank those who supported her through the ordeal, including the UFC, her medical team, and her family.

“I just want to thank everyone,” she said. “I want to thank the UFC for taking such good care of me — Dr. D, Jen, and the whole team. I want to thank Dr. Kim here in New York for seeing me and taking such good care of me. I want to thank my mom, who’s taking care of my kids at home. I want to thank all my coaches at American Top Team and all my teammates.”

A two-time Olympic gold medalist in judo and a former two-time PFL tournament champion, Kayla Harrison has remained unbeaten since joining the UFC. She captured the bantamweight title in June with a submission victory over Julianna Peña.

While Harrison did not provide a timeline for her return to the Octagon, she made it clear that her focus has already shifted to recovery and getting back to competition.

“This is day one of recovery, and the road back starts now,” Harrison said. “I don’t know God’s plans. I know He knows this is my dream, so I’ve got to praise Him in the mountains and I’ve got to praise Him in the valleys. I’m grateful for this. I hope it brings me closer to Him and that He uses this story in a mighty way.”

She ended her message with a promise to fans.

“So that’s it,” Harrison said. “I’m sorry, guys. I’ll be back soon. I’ll be back soon.”

UFC 324 will still go on as scheduled, with Justin Gaethje facing Paddy Pimblett for the interim lightweight title in the main event. Sean O’Malley vs. Song Yadong now serves as the co-main event following Kayla Harrison’s withdrawal.
