Ilia Topuria sustains severe injuries following his first defeat in his professional MMA career.

The former lightweight champion entered the historic White House main event as a heavy favorite against Justin Gaethje. For much of the early fight, it looked like Topuria was on his way to another dominant victory. He hurt Gaethje multiple times and came close to securing a finish in the second round.

Gaethje survived the early storm and began taking control as the fight progressed. The American veteran piled on damage over the final rounds, battering Topuria with relentless pressure and powerful strikes before the bout was stopped by Topuria’s corner after the fourth round.

The defeat not only cost Topuria his lightweight title but also handed him the first loss of his professional career.
Following the fight, UFC CEO Dana White revealed that Topuria was immediately transported to a local hospital in Washington, D.C., due to the extent of the damage he absorbed during the contest.

“We literally had him get out of the octagon before the hand was even raised and sent him to the hospital,” White said during the UFC Freedom 250 post-fight press conference.

“Ilia’s in the hospital. He’s busted up. I’m not a doctor, but his eye looked like he probably has a broken orbital. I don’t know that. That’s not a fact. I’m just assuming.”

“My plans are for him to go home and rest and recover. Take his time. Tonight was a rough night for him. I just want to make sure he’s healthy and good and not even thinking about fighting again. I just want him to go home and relax and rest and heal.”

Fortunately for Topuria, later reports suggested the injury was not as severe as initially feared.Spanish MMA journalist Irati Prat reported that Topuria suffered a small orbital fracture but would not require surgery.

“Good news from Washington: Ilia Topuria is doing well. He’s taking some rest,” Prat wrote on X.“Update on this: pending the definitive results of the CT scan performed at the Washington hospital where he spent the night, Ilia does have a small orbital fracture, but there is NO need whatsoever for surgery. Rest time and that’s it. That’s what they’ve relayed to me.”

The update means Topuria avoided a lengthy surgical recovery, although he will still need significant time away from competition to allow his injuries to heal.

After remaining silent in the immediate aftermath of the loss, Topuria later addressed fans with an emotional message on social media, congratulating Gaethje while promising that the rivalry is far from finished.

“Justin, congratulations. You said you’d leave your mark on my face… and you did. You took the sight from my right eye in the first round, and by the end of the second, from my left too,” Topuria wrote.

“No excuses. I had one of the best camps of my life. I came in sharp, prepared, and ready. Last night was your night.”

“That’s the nature of this game. Glory and pain walk side by side. I’ll heal. I’ll rest. And I’ll return stronger, wiser, and far more dangerous. And trust me… this story between us is far from over. We will have our rematch.”

The fight itself proved to be one of the toughest battles of Topuria’s career. While he started fast and nearly finished Gaethje early, the former champion absorbed increasing damage as the bout wore on.

By the end of the third round, swelling around both eyes had become a serious concern. A cageside physician examined Topuria before allowing him to continue. Although he rallied briefly in the fourth round, Gaethje continued landing heavy shots and capped off his performance with a devastating knee to the body moments before the round ended.

Recognizing the punishment their fighter had taken, Topuria’s corner made the difficult decision to stop the fight before the fifth round began.

For the first time in his professional career, Ilia Topuria walks away from a fight with a loss on his record. Yet the former champion’s response has already shown why many still consider him one of the sport’s brightest stars.

Now, the focus shifts to recovery. Once healed, Ilia Topuria will likely begin the long road back toward reclaiming the lightweight title and securing the rematch he has already vowed to pursue against Justin Gaethje.
