Herb Dean Brings The UFC Experience to Akalaka’s Battle of the Mystic Sword Tournament

Nigerian mixed martial arts (MMA) will attract international attention when Akalaka Spirit of the Warrior hosts Battle of the Mystic Sword in Abuja on Saturday, Oct. 31, with renowned UFC referee Herb Dean set to officiate the bouts.

The event is scheduled to take place at 21 Arena, National Council for Arts and Culture, in the Federal Capital Territory. The promotion is expected to showcase fighters competing for recognition in Nigeria’s developing MMA scene.

Dean’s involvement adds a notable dimension to the event. The veteran official has spent years refereeing high-profile fights in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), where he has overseen contests involving some of the sport’s biggest names.

His presence in Abuja also brings international visibility to a local promotion working to provide Nigerian fighters with opportunities to compete and develop their careers.

While Dean’s involvement is a major talking point, the fighters and their performances will ultimately determine the night’s biggest stories.

The upcoming event gives participating athletes an opportunity to demonstrate their striking, wrestling, grappling and submission skills in front of a live audience. Each matchup will present its own challenges, with fighters needing to balance aggression with technical discipline and sound decision-making.

For emerging Nigerian athletes, events such as Battle of the Mystic Sword can provide valuable competitive experience and a platform to build their reputations. Strong performances can also help fighters attract attention from coaches, promoters and fans following the growth of MMA across Africa.

Akalaka Spirit of the Warrior has previously organised events featuring multiple weight divisions and both male and female competitors. Its April 2026 Battle of Gwarinpa event in Abuja featured 16 fighters, with Emmanuel Benard and Victoria Uduak emerging among the night’s leading performers.

Benard defeated Yakubu Solomon in the headline bout, while Uduak stopped Blessing Shettima in the co-main event. Those results highlighted the range of talent participating in the promotion’s events.

This time, the promotion will be featuring Dean, one of the most recognisable referees in professional MMA. His work in the UFC has placed him at the centre of numerous high-profile contests, where officials must make split-second decisions to protect fighters while allowing competition to continue.

Dean’s experience at the highest level of the sport could make his role one of the event’s most closely watched features.

His participation also places a familiar name from the international MMA circuit in the spotlight at a Nigerian event, potentially drawing attention from fans who regularly follow the UFC.

Beyond the individual matchups, Battle of the Mystic Sword arrives as Nigerian MMA continues to build its presence through local promotions and organised competitions.

With Dean expected to referee the event, Battle of the Mystic Sword has an additional talking point beyond its fight card.
