Chael Sonnen has once again taken aim at longtime rival Jon Jones after the former UFC champion made and quickly reversed, another retirement announcement.
Jon Jones recently told fans he was walking away from MMA, only to walk it back within 24 hours. The latest twist comes amid ongoing tension between Jones and UFC leadership, including CEO Dana White, over contract negotiations and his absence from the planned UFC White House event.
Jones has also claimed he was “lowballed” during talks for a potential blockbuster fight and reportedly pushed for more than $15 million to face elite contenders like Alex Pereira or Tom Aspinall.
Now, with his future once again unclear, Chael Sonnen is calling out what he sees as a deeper issue, credibility.
“Jon Jones publicly retired on Friday, which is enough, per the rules, to have yourself removed from the testing pool,” Sonnen said in a social media video. “On Saturday, he came back and said he is not officially retired, which, per the rules, is enough to reinsert yourself into the testing pool.”
Chael Sonnen made it clear that he believes the situation is not just confusing, it is damaging.
“Now, none of that stuff is happening, and it’s all very silly,” Sonnen continued. “But there is a question: if you’re the baddest dude in the world and you’re going to be the world champion, you’ve got to be a man. And nobody’s going to mistake you for a man, let alone the man, if they can’t trust you.”
“When you put out a statement on Friday and the exact opposite statement on Saturday, there is a simple question,” Sonnen added. “It’s not whether you’re retired or not. It’s simply, what good is your word?”

Chael Sonnen has long been one of Jon Jones’ most vocal critics, but their rivalry dates back years inside the Octagon, including their headline clash at UFC 159. Since then, Sonnen has continued to challenge Jones publicly while still acknowledging his greatness as one of the sport’s most talented fighters.
Sonnen also expanded on his comments during a separate YouTube breakdown, where he criticized Jones’ inconsistency and its impact on his standing in the sport.
“When we end up in a situation like this with Jon, where he’s in and he’s out,” Sonnen said, “you can’t count on a guy like that. That’s the knock on him. That’s why people say they can’t build around him.”
Chael Sonnen also referenced comments made by Dana White, suggesting that trust issues have followed Jones for years.
“It creates a very unusual and difficult position,” Sonnen said. “Dana White came out and said there’s nothing different than it has been the last 10 years. He said they can’t make a business off this guy.”
Sonnen then contrasted Jones’ situation with the retirement of Khabib Nurmagomedov, who stepped away at the peak of his career and never returned.
“That’s not how men talk,” Sonnen said. “When Khabib said, ‘I’m done,’ there was never a doubt. We may not have liked it, but we respected it because we could trust his word.”
The tension between Chael Sonnen and Jon Jones continues to grow, fueled by years of history, missed opportunities, and unresolved disputes dating back to their canceled UFC 151 clash. What began as rivalry has turned into a long-running debate over legacy, reliability, and respect.
