Anthony Smith returns to competition next month despite facing serious legal challenges away from the cage.
The former UFC light heavyweight title challenger has been booked to compete in Jorge Masvidal’s Gamebred FC promotion on October 2 in the Dominican Republic. Smith will take on former PFL prospect Jordan Heiderman in the main event as part of the promotion’s heavyweight tournament.
The announcement comes just weeks after Smith pleaded not guilty to charges of domestic violence, false imprisonment, terroristic threats, and other offenses stemming from a July incident involving his wife. Smith was released on a $500,000 bond and could face significant prison time if convicted.
Despite the ongoing case, Gamebred FC has chosen to move forward with Smith’s scheduled return, a decision that has sparked debate among fans and the wider MMA community.
Following criticism over the booking, Gamebred FC released a statement from promotion president Lex McMahon explaining why the organization decided to proceed with Smith’s fight.
“As we announce Anthony Smith’s return to the Gamebred FC cage, I want to speak directly about where our organization stands,” McMahon said.”Anthony is facing serious allegations, and like every person in this country, he is entitled to due process and the presumption of innocence while his case moves through the courts. He has pleaded not guilty, and that process deserves to play out fully and fairly, on its own timeline, without a promotion, a headline, or public opinion getting ahead of the facts.”
McMahon also pointed to Smith’s responsibility to support his family while the legal process unfolds.
“He also has a family to provide for, and competing is how he does that. Taking away his ability to earn a living before he has had his day in court is not something Gamebred FC is willing to do to him or to the people who depend on him,” the statement read.
The promotion’s stance has divided opinion, with some fans arguing that Smith should not compete while facing such serious allegations, while others believe the legal process should run its course before any judgment is made.
The upcoming bout marks another chapter in Smith’s unexpected return to fighting.
After ending his UFC career with a loss to Zhang Mingyang at UFC Kansas City, Smith announced his retirement from mixed martial arts. However, the veteran later reversed course and signed with Gamebred FC, returning to action earlier this year.
Smith made an immediate impact by defeating Chase Sherman in the opening round of the heavyweight tournament, earning his place in the next stage of the competition.
Now, Anthony Smith returns looking to move one step closer to the tournament final while simultaneously navigating one of the most challenging periods of his personal life.
