Poirier

Dustin Poirier’s coach, Mike Brown, believes the fighter still has gas in the tank to compete after his upcoming retirement bout with Max Holloway.

Poirier is set for his retirement fight against Holloway in their trilogy bout for the BMF belt in New Orleans. This will be Poirier’s first time in the cage since his loss to Islam Makhachev at UFC 302.

Following that bout, Poirier has been pretty vocal about retiring and has made it clear that his fight with Holloway will be it for him.

However, Mike Brown says Poirier could be enticed to fight again, though he hopes this will be the end.

In a recent interview with MMA Fighting, coach Mike Brown opened the door to Poirier continuing his career after UFC 318.

“I mean, I think so. You can never say never, but he’s done really well for himself. He’s made a boatload of money. He’s set,” Brown said of Poirier.

“He doesn’t need to fight. So it would have to be something pretty enticing. I mean, that could always happen, but I think he’s content with his accomplishments and content with the money he has made and what he’s done.”

The BMF title will be up for grabs in this UFC 318 bout, and it would be a perfect win to solidify Poirier’s legacy. Despite Holloway losing to Ilia Topuria in his last fight at UFC 308, his BMF title wasn’t taken, leaving it open for potential contenders like Poirier to win.

Dustin Poirier is 30-9 with one no contest as a pro and is coming off a submission loss to Islam Makhachev for the lightweight belt. The former interim champ holds notable wins over Conor McGregor, Max Holloway, Justin Gaethje, Anthony Pettis, and Eddie Alvarez.
