In a sad turn of events, amateur fighter Trokon Dousuah dies after completing and winning a three-round charity bout in Alberta, Canada.
The charity event took place at the Enoch Community Center. The fighter, a personal trainer native to Edmonton, decided to try his luck in the cage, but the affair didn’t go down well with him. After three rounds in the cage, the fighter managed to tap you, but it seemed the damage had already been done as he was staggering on his feet.
Dousuah was carried backstage and attended to for forty minutes before he was finally rushed to the local hospital. The fighter died shortly after arriving at the hospital. Although the Royal Canadian Mounted Police are still investigating the cause of death, many are certain it was a result of the grappling in the cage.
Fellow amateur MMA fighter Natalia Rajkovic says the promotion is to blame for their gross negligence and lack of safety precautions during the fight.
“I absolutely think it could have been prevented in so many different ways,” Rajkovic told CTV News. “Starting from the medicals, if he was properly taken care of.”
The promotion in charge of this event [Ultra MMA] has been facing a backlash since this incident. The facility[Enoch Nation] where the tournament took place came out to clear the air and said only the promotion used only the venue, not the staff.
“Unfortunately, Ultra MMA privately rented our facility and hired their own staffing team,” Enoch Nation said in a statement following the death of Dousuah. “So, our staff were not present during the event and have no information to share at this time.”
The tournament featured over 30 fighters who were forced to weigh in on fight night. Due to this development, many of the fighters had cut weight fast, which has been known to cause serious complications for fighters.
