Henderson

Former UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson is officially stepping back into the cage.

Three years after announcing his retirement from mixed martial arts, Henderson has decided unfinished business still remains. The MMA veteran will return at age 42 to headline an upcoming Professional Fighters League event in what promises to be one of the promotion’s most talked-about matchups of the year.

The PFL confirmed that Henderson will face undefeated welterweight prospect Patrick Habirora in the main event of PFL Brussels on May 23. The bout sets up a fascinating clash between experience and youth as Henderson attempts another late-career title run.

Henderson originally walked away from MMA following a stoppage loss to Usman Nurmagomedov at Bellator 292 in March 2023. At the time, many believed the former champion had closed the chapter on an already legendary career.

Instead, Henderson stayed active outside traditional MMA competition, testing himself in boxing, grappling, and Karate Combat bouts. Despite suffering a loss to Idris Virgo in Misfits Boxing in September 2024 and a recent grappling defeat to Aljamain Sterling at RAF 6, Henderson never drifted far from competition.

Now, Henderson is returning to where he built his legacy. The comeback announcement signals that the former UFC champion still believes he can compete at an elite level despite entering his 40s.

Henderson faces one of the toughest stylistic challenges possible in rising Belgian star Patrick Habirora. The 24-year-old prospect remains unbeaten and has quickly become one of the PFL’s fastest-rising names.

Habirora earned attention with knockout victories over UFC veterans Kevin Jousset and Danny Roberts, improving to a perfect professional record while going 4-0 inside the PFL SmartCage.

Henderson

The fight represents more than a comeback, it is a generational showdown. Henderson brings championship pedigree and decades of elite experience, while Habirora represents the new wave PFL hopes to build around globally. Henderson remains one of the greatest lightweights in MMA history.

During his prime, he secured notable wins over Patricio Pitbull, Frankie Edgar, and Nate Diaz, establishing himself as one of the most durable champions of his era.

After leaving the UFC in 2016, Henderson enjoyed a strong Bellator run, challenging for the lightweight title twice before eventually stepping away from the sport.

Now, the comeback places Henderson directly into the welterweight title picture. The winner of Henderson vs. Habirora could move into contention for reigning champion Thad Jean, adding immediate stakes to the matchup.

For Henderson, the motivation appears simple: competition never left him.

The former champion returns not just for nostalgia, but for another run at gold, proving that even at 42, Henderson still believes his story inside the cage is far from finished.
