Ben Askren has never been short on grit, but the last six months tested him in ways no opponent ever could. The MMA and wrestling legend is now six months removed from a successful double lung transplant, and he’s taking a moment to reflect on survival, gratitude, and a completely new outlook on life.
2025 delivered the toughest fight of Ben Askren’s life. The former UFC welterweight contender was hospitalized with severe pneumonia caused by a staph infection. During his stay, Askren later revealed he flatlined four times and lost more than 50 pounds as his condition worsened. Doctors made it clear: without a double lung transplant, he would not survive.
Against the odds, the call came. In late June, Askren received the life-saving transplant, a moment his family and the combat sports world described as nothing short of a miracle. While the road back to normal life remains long, his recovery has inspired fans, fighters, and peers across the globe.
Marking six months post-surgery, Ben Askren shared a heartfelt update on social media, reflecting on pain, progress, and perspective.
“6 MONTHS post transplant today!!! The last 6 months brought so many tough days and even as they are starting to get easier I know I’m still a long way off normal,” Askren wrote.
“The last 6 months have also brought so many amazing moments to me through relationships with friends, getting to spend more time with my family and becoming a believer.”
Askren also spoke about the mental shift that followed his near-death experience, emphasizing acceptance and forward movement.

“Sometimes life hits you hard, but it is vital to accept it and choose to move forward the best you can,” he added.
“Whether it was in person or on socials I am so grateful for all of the support, it was very inspiring to me.”
That support came from everywhere. Fighters, fans, and organizations rallied behind him. UFC CEO Dana White and former rival Jake Paul contributed financially, while fundraisers and prayers flooded social media as Askren fought for his life.
Now home and continuing his recovery, Askren remains realistic about the challenges ahead. Doctors have noted that lung transplant patients face long-term hurdles, but the former Olympian approaches the future with gratitude and resolve.
“I said this already in one of my videos, but the support you guys gave me… it meant so much,” Askren said.
“It was so great to just have all this support and all the love, and hopefully I’m not in this situation again for a really, really, really long time. I plan on living a while.”
Six months after staring death in the face, Ben Askren isn’t talking about wins, losses, or championships. He’s talking about life and he’s holding on to it with the same toughness that defined his career.
