UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones has finally reached an agreement and had his assault charges dropped.
Earlier this year, Jones was issued a misdemeanor charge after drug testing agents came to his house for a routine test.
According to the officers, Jones was hostile and aggressive towards them, but Jones denied these allegations.
“I was recently visited by testers while I was celebrating a birthday and taking a nap,” he wrote in a social media post.
“Upon waking up, I was caught off guard by the unprofessionalism and protocol of one of the testers. This caused frustration, leading me to use some profanity I regret.
“However, I want to emphasize that at no point did I threaten, get in anyone’s face, raise my voice to anyone, or engage in any form of assault. It’s unfortunate that false news has been spread without proper fact-checking. I want to assure you that I will vigorously defend myself against these baseless accusations. The truth is, the incident simply did not occur.”
The testers accused Jones of being agitated after he wasn’t able to provide urine samples. One of the testers[Crystal Martinez] claimed Jones was asking if they had money and threatened to sue them. She told the [police she was scared for her life and felt threatened by the fighter.
Luckily for the fighter, the case was appealed, and Judge Asra Elliott approved an agreement between the arresting officer and Jones. The agreement states that as long as the fighter avoids any trouble for the next 90 days and undergoes anger management, the charges–assault, petty misdemeanor, and interference with communication—will be dropped.
Jones appeared at the hearing via zoom call and issued a statement after the conclusion of the hearing.
“I would like to extend my thanks to the justice system for reaching a prompt resolution in this matter. It affirms my innocence and enables me to maintain my focus on the upcoming fight.”Jones wrote. “I am eagerly anticipating the opportunity to defend my heavyweight title on November 16th at Madison Square Garden.”
Jones is set to face Stipe Miocic on November 16. He has confirmed that this battle may be his last before his retirement.
