UFC fighter Colby Covington recently announced that he might be fighting for the UFC welterweight title in 2025. His statement came after Belal Miuhammad’s victory over Leon Edwards in Manchester.
Although the bout was well anticipated, it seemed it didn’t live up to the hype, as fans have come out to call it the most boring match on the card. Covington, who also shared this opinion, spoke about the fight in an interview with Submission Radio:
“I feel bad for the fans, man. They got robbed of some entertainment and the highest-level fight of two bums, so I feel bad for the fans,” he said about the UFC 304 main event.
“Not really, just because I know that Leon made so much money in the last fight with me that I don’t think he’s hungry anymore. I think he’s lost his motivation. He has nothing more to fight for. What is he fighting for? He’s already achieved everything that he’s set out to do. He’s reached the top of the mountain. And, he’s not the type of guy that’s gonna get knocked down, get back up and fight harder, he’s a quitter. He’s shown it in the past, and you can tell he just doesn’t have that hunger anymore.”
“I don’t know what happened in the fight or how the fight went, but I could just tell you that I knew Leon wasn’t gonna be motivated. I think that’s the last we saw of him. Now Leon can go back to the prelims, where he belongs.”
Covington also had a lot to say about Muhammad.
The guy’s a f*cking p*ssy.” He continued. “ The only time that (Belal Muhammad) wanted to fight me was when I already had a title fight signed, sealed and delivered. That’s the only time he’s wanted to fight me. Otherwise, he’s never said my name because he’s a little b*tch. He knows what I would do to him. If I cross paths with him, he won’t be champion anymore. He won’t be a man anymore. I will take his man card, and we know he’s still a virgin. I’d love to fight him. I hope that fight happens. I’ll do whatever it takes to get to that.”
Before his shot at the title, Muhammad has constantly rallied for a matchup with Covington, but his request was always turned down. ‘Remember the Name’ feels it’s time for a payback as he ignores Covington’s request for a fight. In an interview with MMA Fighting, he said:
”That was honestly the funniest thing. I’m not even going to bring attention to it because then I’m going to have a back-and-forth with him. This guy’s a joke now. He understands he’s a joke now. So he’s trying to go out there and call out these bigger names now.”
The 36-year-old former welterweight champ hasn’t competed since his unanimous decision loss to Edwards, but he remains optimistic about getting a chance in 2025. The fighter believes Muhammad’s belt will be taken from him when he faces Shavkat Rakhmonov: I think I’ll be fighting s***-rat [Shavkat] before the end of next year,” I don’t think anything special of s***-rat. He fights very tall, chin up in the air… He’s finished a lot of nobodies, but he hasn’t fought top contenders yet.”
