The reigning UFC welterweight champion is targeting a return to the Octagon before Ramadan begins in February 2027, putting December 2026 or January 2027 in the frame for his next championship fight. Makhachev revealed his plans after successfully defending his welterweight title against Ian Machado Garry at UFC 330 in August, extending his UFC-record winning streak to 17 consecutive victories.
Makhachev is currently recovering from minor spinal issues discovered during post-fight medical examinations. He has stressed that the problem is not serious and is focusing on strengthening his back before returning to competition.Though he is eager to return to action soon, Makhachev told Match TV.
“After the fight, I had three MRIs and had my entire spine checked,” Makhachev said (Russian-to-English translation via Championship Rounds). “There are a few small issues, so I’m working on them. It’s nothing serious. I’m just strengthening my spine.”
Despite the setback, the champion isn’t planning a long layoff. Makhachev wants to compete again before Ramadan, which begins in February 2027. That leaves a relatively narrow window for his next title defense, with December or January emerging as the most likely targets if his recovery goes as planned. However, the UFC has yet to officially announce a date or opponent.
Makhachev has had to make a few physical adjustments since moving up from lightweight, where he set the record for most successful UFC title defenses in that division. Any physical issues he’s been dealing with haven’t held him back as he scored a dominant decision win over Jack Della Maddalena to become champion before defeating Garry. Makhachev has typically structured his fight schedule around Ramadan and if everything works out, Makhachev could be back in early 2027. “We’ll wait for the UFC to call,” Makhachev said. “I think the ideal scenario would be to fight before Ramadan. Ramadan starts for us in February. A date before Ramadan would be ideal.”
For now, Makhachev’s next opponent and fight date remain unconfirmed, but the welterweight champion has made his intentions clear. With December 2026 or January 2027 in his sights, Makhachev could be back in the Octagon before Ramadan begins, adding another chapter to his remarkable championship run.
