The much-anticipated professional boxing match between revered boxing legend Mike Tyson and unconventional boxer Jake Paul has sent shockwaves through the combat sports community. Scheduled for July 20, 2024, this event has captured the attention of a vast audience, all on the edge of their seats, eagerly awaiting the outcome.
Although both fighters are good, there is no doubt that Tyson has the upper hand, albeit retired. The fighter has an impressive record as a pound-for-pound vicious opponent in his prime. Tyson was known for knocking out his opponents by slowly picking them apart and breaking their defenses before leaving them sprawled on the floor. Despite being retired, The athlete still managed to stay in shape and agreed to take on a younger challenger-Jake Paul. While the former YouTuber pales in comparison to the accomplished 57-year-old former champion, he still has a good rap sheet with amazing striking power, though he seems to be letting the hype get to his head.
In recent interviews, Jake taunted Tyson, calling him an ‘old man’ and threatening to knock him out. This statement didn’t go too well with former UFC heavyweight champion Matt Brown. In a sit down with The Fighter vs The Writer, brown criticized Paul’s decision to trash-talk the legend,
“I think the worst thing Jake Paul could do is go talk shit to Mike Tyson like he’s doing. It just doesn’t add up to me. Like Mike Tyson is an old stoner at this point. He’s a podcaster. He doesn’t give a f**k about fighting. He’s in there to make money. But now you want to awaken that old beast? What in the f**king hell are you thinking, bro? I don’t care if he’s 60 years old. I train with Mark Coleman at 60 all the time. But, I don’t want to get hit by Coleman. And I don’t care how old that motherf**ker is.”
Brown went on to say: “ When I see a guy like Mark Coleman, who comes in my gym all the time, 60 years old, around the age of Mike Tyson, 58,59, close to 6o– and he’s done to his body through the drugs, the alcohol, not training for years and then I see him train–it gives me hope for Mike Tyson…”
“So cringe, Jake Paul trying to f**king be hard on Mike Tyson. Jesus Christ. You can’t do that. For one, it’s Mike Tyson. For two, you wouldn’t do that 20, 30years ago when you were born– if you were an adult back then. You wouldn’t even have thought about it. I don’t get the thought process here. Jake Paul usually seems pretty calculated with everything he’s doing and smart about it. But if there’s one guy you don’t want to wake up the f**king savage killer inside, it’s f**king Mike Tyson!”
“People talk about speed goes first, and your power stays, all this kind of sh*t, honestly what goes first is your mind. Brown continued. “Just bloodthirsty hunger… You don’t want to awaken that f**25-year-old -old that sits still in him. I don’t get the idea of trying to do that. That is not the motherf**king animal that you want to be poking.”
Many believe Paul has a high chance of winning due to Tyson’s age, but the former boxer still seems to have some gas left in his tank.
