Things have gone from bad to worse for Patchy Mix.Once regarded as one of the best bantamweights in the world, Patchy Mix has struggled to regain momentum following a difficult stretch in his career.
Now, the former Bellator champion has suffered another setback after missing weight for his scheduled bout at RIZIN 54.
Mix was set to face Shoko Sato in Tokyo on Tuesday as he looked to snap a three-fight losing streak. Instead, headlines were dominated by his appearance on the scales.
The former Bellator bantamweight champion came in at 63.85kg (140.7 pounds), more than six pounds over the 61kg (134.4-pound) bantamweight limit. It marked the first time in Patchy Mix’s professional career that he failed to make the contracted weight for a fight.
Following the weigh-in, Mix took to social media to address the situation and apologize to everyone affected by the miss.
“Very sorry to my opponent, the boss and RIZIN fans,” Mix wrote.“As I got sick towards the end of my weight cut for my category. I am grateful that he still accepted the bout under these circumstances. Much respect, but now I have to focus on putting on the best match for the Japanese fans tonight.”
Despite the apology, the weight miss carries significant consequences.Under RIZIN rules, an overweight fighter cannot officially win the bout. Even if Patchy Mix has his hand raised, the result would automatically be changed to a no-contest. The promotion also removed the fight from its original co-main event position following the weigh-in controversy.
The latest setback continues a difficult run for the 31-year-old.At the peak of his Bellator career, Patchy Mix was widely viewed as a legitimate pound-for-pound talent. He won 20 of his first 21 professional fights, captured Bellator gold, and successfully defended his title multiple times. His dominant run sparked endless debates about how he would fare against elite UFC bantamweights such as Sean O’Malley and Merab Dvalishvili.
That success led to one of the biggest UFC signings of 2025. However, the move failed to deliver the results many expected. Mix went 0-2 inside the Octagon, suffering losses to Jakub Wiklacz and Mario Bautista before parting ways with the promotion.
After leaving the UFC, Patchy Mix signed with RIZIN in hopes of revitalizing his career. His debut didn’t go according to plan, as he suffered a second-round knockout loss to Kyoma Akimoto in March. The defeat extended his losing streak to three fights and prompted a return to the bantamweight division.
Now, instead of focusing solely on ending that skid, Mix finds himself answering questions about a failed weight cut.
The pressure is mounting for the former champion, who desperately needs a strong performance to get his career back on track.
