The rivalry between Ilia Topuria and Justin Gaethje has taken a deeply personal turn ahead of their highly anticipated lightweight title unification clash at UFC Freedom 250.
For much of the buildup, the two fighters kept their exchanges focused on competition. However, tensions escalated when Gaethje took a shot at Topuria’s recent divorce from Giorgina Uzcategui, a situation that forced the UFC lightweight champion to take a brief break from competition.
Topuria stepped away from the sport while handling custody arrangements involving his children before eventually reaching a settlement and returning to action. Now, with UFC Freedom 250 approaching, the champion has made it clear that Gaethje’s comments crossed a line.
During the first episode of UFC Freedom 250 Embedded, Ilia Topuria delivered a blunt response to the interim champion.
“Take this, Justin,” Topuria said. “Actually, I thought he was a great guy. But since he crossed the personal line, he’s not going to have my respect; he’s not going to have my team’s respect.”
Topuria then issued a chilling prediction for their June 14 showdown.
“All I’m going to need is two minutes in the octagon with you, and I’m going to put you to sleep in front of your whole family, your country, in front of everyone.”

The bad blood between the two fighters has intensified in recent weeks. Topuria previously stirred controversy by releasing a mock funeral video that featured a photo of Gaethje alongside several former opponents he had defeated. The video did not sit well with “The Highlight,” who responded by mocking Topuria’s personal life during a media appearance.
Before those comments, the relationship between the two champions had remained relatively respectful. Now, the title fight carries an added emotional edge.
Ilia Topuria enters UFC Freedom 250 as a significant betting favorite. The undefeated champion has repeatedly expressed confidence that he will finish Gaethje and continue his march toward superstardom.
The stakes extend beyond the lightweight division. A victory over Gaethje could open the door to a blockbuster showdown with UFC welterweight champion Islam Makhachev, a fight that would give Topuria the opportunity to chase a third UFC title and further cement his legacy.
Still, many fans believe Ilia Topuria may have unfinished business at lightweight, regardless of how dominant he looks against Gaethje. Contenders such as Arman Tsarukyan continue to wait for their opportunity, creating several intriguing possibilities for the champion’s future.
For now, however, Topuria appears focused on one thing: settling the score with Justin Gaethje inside the Octagon.
