Khamzat Chimaev may already have his eyes set on the next chapter of his UFC career following his heartbreaking title loss to Sean Strickland at UFC 328.
Just hours after suffering the first defeat of his professional MMA career, Chimaev posted a cryptic message on social media that immediately got fans talking.
“See you again soon.”
The short message came after Chimaev dropped a razor-close split decision to Strickland in the UFC 328 main event in Newark. Two judges scored the fight 48-47 in favor of Strickland, allowing the outspoken American to reclaim the UFC middleweight title and become a two-time champion at 185 pounds.
Despite weeks of heated trash talk leading into the fight, the tension between the two fighters completely disappeared once the bout ended. Chimaev embraced Strickland inside the Octagon and even wrapped the middleweight belt around his waist after the decision was announced.
Now, however, questions are beginning to grow about whether Khamzat Chimaev will remain at middleweight.
During the UFC 328 post-fight press conference, UFC CEO Dana White revealed that Chimaev personally told him he wants to move up to light heavyweight.
“He literally walked up to me after the fight and said, ‘I want to move up. I don’t want to fight in this weight class anymore,’” White revealed.
The move would not come as a complete surprise. Khamzat Chimaev repeatedly hinted over the last year that the brutal middleweight weight cut was becoming increasingly difficult. Even before UFC 328, he openly discussed his desire to eventually chase a second title at 205 pounds.
Against Strickland, Chimaev appeared dominant early whenever he threatened with his wrestling, but as the fight stayed standing longer, Strickland slowly took over the striking exchanges and dragged the challenger into deep waters.
Once the fight became a stand-up battle, Strickland found success with pressure, volume, and durability, handing Chimaev the first loss of his career.
White admitted he still views Chimaev as one of the UFC’s most special talents despite the setback.
“When you see somebody fight for the first time and you’re like, ‘Wow, this guy is special,’ and they become a world champion in the UFC, yeah,” White said. “I would say so.”
White also suggested that Chimaev’s growing fame and lifestyle changes may have added extra pressure over the years.

“Ever since Fight Island, he’s gone on a run,” White explained. “Won the world title, did everything that he said he was going to do, but with the level of success and lifestyle, it makes it tough.”
If Khamzat Chimaev officially moves to light heavyweight, it could open the door to several blockbuster matchups at 205 pounds. At the same time, the middleweight division still offers unfinished business, including a possible rematch with Strickland.
For now, fans may have to wait for answers. Chimaev has fought just once per year since 2023, and his next move remains uncertain.
